Interior of the Stanley Spencer Gallery, Cookham

About

Stanley Spencer was one of the greatest painters of the 20th century. He lived and worked in Cookham for most of his life.  His paintings are full of love, vision and hope  -  just right to set your spirits soaring.

In the Stanley Spencer Gallery, in Cookham High Street, visitors can see the largest collection of Spencer paintings on display anywhere in the world.  Amongst the wonderful exhibits in a changing exhibition, there are always loans from the finest art galleries in the UK as well as from private collectors. There is video of the great artist, too, plenty for children to do, and lots of great local eateries to delight your palate.

The works include vivid dreamlike depictions of biblical or spiritual events, set in Spencer’s beloved Cookham, alongside moving depictions of flowers, gardens and the outdoor environment, plus unforgettable figurative paintings of loved ones in significant scenes from Spencer’s complex and often troubled personal life .

The Stanley Spencer Gallery has been named by ArtFund as one of five most ’unmissable’ small Art Galleries in the UK.  It also holds a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence.
