In addition to its permanent galleries, SOFO showcases its reserve collection in its temporary display space, the Cloister Gallery. Running inside the modern museum building a Grade 11 listed wall helps form a unique exhibition space. From August 2014-August 2015, SOFO’s remarkable Great War collection is highlighted in ‘Oxfordshire Remembers 1914-1918’. Combining SOFO’s previously unseen military heritage collections with a unique series of community projects and events, our first temporary exhibition promises to capture the imagination of all visitors from family historians, school groups and individuals. This exhibition explores the lives of people at war through their photographs and personal possessions, from Britain’s declaration of war on 4th August 1914c to the end of the Battle of the Somme in November 1916. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund it is hoped the exhibition enables understanding of the sense of duty, service and sacrifice shown by those who lived and fought in the First World War.
SOFO offers an ongoing events calendar; combining lectures for the military minded, drop in arts and crafts activities for families, a Saturday Kids Club and family history days.
The Friends and Family membership schemes provide opportunities to become even more involved, with unique behind the scenes days, adopt an object and the chance to curate exhibitions.
