The Angel

About

This coaching inn with medieval origins reopened its doors in July 2011 having been closed for some time following major refurbishment, and what a resounding success it’s been. Retaining oodles of character, The Angel now once again graces the centre of Petworth, one of Britain’s most attractive market towns.

The very friendly owners go all out to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere where guests can unwind. Big enough inside to suit everyone - whether you want a bit of peace and quiet in a cosy corner or a lively atmosphere in the spacious bar area - The Angel is a perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon with friends, or just the newspaper and some very good coffee. Imagine the scene: ships beams, wooden and slate floors, stone walls and fireplaces (one of which is used to spit roast joints of meat); the open fires are particularly inviting when winter rolls in. Then there's the outdoor space, beautifully laid out with plenty of room between tables and floodlit at night, a delight during warmer weather. Dining is a relaxed affair, too! It’s difficult to fault the top-class service and quality of home-cooked food, which incorporates local produce where possible.

There are six individually designed bedrooms each named after a local area or person, with either en suite shower or bath. An old-world charm blends perfectly with the modern conveniences, and most rooms come complete with a four-poster bed. The Angel provides an idyllic base set in the South Downs National Park. With so much to see and do nearby, including horse racing and motor racing at Goodwood, walking and horse riding on the South Downs, golf, and fishing in the chalk streams at Arundel, The Angel’s hearty breakfast goes down a storm before setting off for an action-packed day ahead.
