Vanguard Way is the ideal route for the walking enthusiast. At 66 miles (107 km) of beautiful walking trail, stretching from Croydon on the southern outskirts of London to Newhaven in East Sussex, Vanguard Way can easily be covered within a week or less (or spread out over a couple of weekends if you prefer!).
The route was established in 1981 and is lovingly managed by the Vanguards Rambling Club. A step-by-step route description and a detailed guide to accommodation and refreshments can be downloaded free from their website, and a badge and certificate are available on completion of the route, providing a little extra motivation for the longer stretches of the walk!
Vanguard Way traverses some of the best scenery in Southern England, including the North Downs, The Weald, Ashdown Forest and South Downs National Park, finishing along a spectacular stretch of the Sussex Heritage Coast. It is suitable for people from all walks of life, as it follows peaceful footpaths and bridleways, goes through some delightful villages and passes many places of interest including Titsey Place, Haxted Mill, Dry Hill Iron Age camp, Tickerage Mill and Winnie-the-Pooh’s Galleons Lap!
There is plenty to explore on route and off route, and while it’s fun to travel off the beaten path as well, you can now make sure you can find your way back, with a mobile trail map you can view on the go, on your phone – so you’ll never miss a step! With so many alluring attractions, welcoming pubs and accommodation and beautiful sights to see along the way, it’s easy to see why Vanguard Way is such a well-loved route for walkers – come experience it for yourself and join the many admirers of this majestic walk.
