Sulgrave Manor

About

Sulgrave Manor is a superb example of a modest Manor House and Garden of the time of Shakespeare, and was the home of George Washingtons direct ancestors. In 1539 the Manor was bought from Henry VIII by Lawrence Washington a successful Northampton Wool Merchant and his descendants were to live there for the next 120years.

Housing a wonderful collection of 16th century furniture and fabrics, the house is shown by friendly and informative guides. Built by Lawrence Washington, in 1539, held in trust for the people of the US and the UK, it has probably the largest collection in the UK of memoralistic of America's first president, Lawrence's direct descendant. The gardens were designed in the 1920s by Sir Reginald Blomfield and remains a fine example of the formal English Style.
