Royal Military Canal, Rye, East Sussex

About

The scenic route this canal takes is perfect for walking and cycling.  Dug by hand in the early 19th century, the canal was designed as a defence barrier on the low-lying land between Winchelsea and Hythe.

The canal is now used by the Environment Agency to manage water levels across much of the marsh and is vital to the area's flood protection.  Today the full length of the canal has a public footpath along it and makes an excellent way-marked trail with numerous interpretation panels.  The canal is also a haven for some of the special wildlife of the Romney Marsh; kingfishers can regularly be seen and during the summer the canal comes alive with hovering dragonflies and noisy marsh frogs.
