About
Come and enjoy some proper English hospitality at this 16th-century pub, which has recently under gone a half-million makeover by the current owners who took over The Pointer in May 2011.
It is easy to imagine that there has been a pub located on this site since the 1700′s, and this beautiful collection of historic red-brick buildings now continues the proud tradition in a much more sophisticated guise.
The restoration has been a journey back through time, rescuing ancient walls and old stonework – some of which date back to the days of Agincourt – to restore the pub to its former glory. Beautiful wood-burning fires and low wooden beams provide the perfect backdrop for a quintessential English country scene with animal pictures and ‘Best of Show’ rosettes adorning on the walls.
Beer starts close to home with the ‘Pointer Pint’ developed at a brewery just down the road. The Pointer also supports other local breweries including Rebellion in nearby Marlow and Hook Norton in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. There is also an excellent wine list to match that offers many interesting wines that best suit the food you are eating.
But The Pointer isn’t just somewhere where you can get a warm welcome and a great pint. The restaurant, with its open-plan kitchen, is an elegant space housed in a converted barn with vaulted ceilings and antique Ercol chairs. The attitude to food here is pretty straightforward: they cook what is best on the day, using seasonal produce either grown in their own kitchen garden or obtained from local suppliers. Simple and delicious, dishes also incorporate meat from the on-site butcher’s shop and deli – open on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings – which in turn is supplied by the owners’ very own award-winning rare breed farm.
The lovely rear garden is gated and secure for children to play. The owners have two children and are very aware of parents needs: a colouring corner keeps them amused and organic nappies and wet ones are supplied in the toilets, along with other organic toiletries.
The pub stands at the centre of a vibrant, historic village next to All Saints Church, with the famous Brill windmill watching over proceedings from atop the surrounding hills. The idyllic countryside setting makes this pub a popular stop over with ramblers, cyclists and dog walkers – hence dogs are always very welcome (with a name like The Pointer that should come as no surprise).
