About

Built over 300 years ago and by the East India Company this was a thriving and successful gunpowder mill, now the remains of this historic site is are owned by Guildford Borough Council who have a duty of care to protect this site which is a designated as a monument.

Although a large majority of buildings were demolished in the 20th century over 100 key buildings still remain within the site. Chilworth Gunpower Mills is one of the earliest examples of gunpower mills and in the first half of the 17th century it was the sole legal producer of gunpower in England to the King.

The Tillingbourne river runs along the northern boundary, the original gunpower mills canal runs along the southern bourndary.

Today this area is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy wildlife and wonderful wild flowers in the spring.
