Relax and enjoy the sensational historic capital in Maritime Kent, encompassing Rochester and Chatham.
Retreat and let down your defences in the fantastic surroundings of the ancient city of Rochester, home to England’s second oldest cathedral standing proudly next to its inseparable twin Rochester Castle.
Rochester boosts a variety of antique shops, restaurants, tea rooms and has a wealth of buildings of great architectural and historic interest. These include the impressive 17th century Guildhall Museum with its excellent museum, Restoration House, an imposing red brick mansion beautifully restored to its original splendour.
The novelist Charles Dickens lived in the area and included the city in his works. Step into the heart of Chatham’s legendary ship building heritage with a visit to the Historic Dockyard Chatham. Return to the ‘Age of Sail’, when the Dockyard built mighty ships that won command of the world’s oceans.
Set in tranquil grounds adjoining a riverside village, this rare example of an Elizabethan artillery fort was begun in 1559 and redeveloped in 1599-1601, to protect warships moored at Chatham dockyards. Despite a brave attempt, it entirely failed to do so in 1667, when the Dutch sailed past it to burn or capture the English fleet at anchor you will find Upnor Castle.
The Royal Engineers Museum with exhibits of national and international importance, and ‘Kingswear Castle’ the last coal-fired paddle steamer remaining in service in Britain.
