Herstmonceux is a village and civil parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex.
The name 'Herstmonceux' comes from the Anglo-Saxon word 'hyrst' meaning 'wooded hill' as well as the name of the Monceux family who were lords of the manor there in the 12th century.
The Herstmonceux area is famous for the making of trugs which is baskets made from split willow boards set in an ash or chestnut frame.
Herstmonceux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in 550 acres of glorious parkland & superb Elizabethan gardens.
Built originally as a country home in the mid 15th Century, Herstmonceux Castle embodies the history of medieval England and the romance of renaissance Europe.
The Herstmonceux Medieval Festival is held annually in August.
