'Under Namibian Skies – Adventures of an Astronomer in the Namib Desert'

With Caroline Beevis

Saturday 25 November

11.30am

Tickets £8

The Namib Desert is a hauntingly beautiful region in Southern Africa, where giant red dunes tower over an ancient landscape beneath some of the darkest, clearest night skies on the planet. Over a period of eight years Caroline travelled there five times as guest astronomer at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge where, using a powerful telescope, she gave nightly tours of the Southern Hemisphere skies to visitors from all over the world, having many adventures along the way. With images of the night skies and vast desert landscape, and evocative Namibian song, come along and hear the story of her time in the great Namib Desert.

Free entry into the exhibition 'Moon' (normally £4) for attendees.

'Space Dogs, The True Story of Russia's Canine Cosmonauts'

With Caroline Beevis

Saturday 25 November

2pm

Tickets £8

2017 marked the 60th anniversary of the historic Sputnik 2 orbital flight – only the second spacecraft to orbit the Earth, and the first to carry a living being – the little dog Laika.

Caroline's presentation tells the true story of all 48 dogs and the scientists who were given the task of sending an animal into space in preparation for Yuri Gagarin's history-making flight. It features rare images and footage leading up to and beyond Laika's historic flight, some beautiful artwork from people around the world, and an uplifting and poignant song.

An informative, sympathetic account, and an entertaining presentation suitable for all.

Free entry into the exhibition 'Moon' (normally £4) for attendees.
