On May 11th, from 10:00 to 16:30, the Ramsgate Tunnels will host a local history day coinciding with their 10th anniversary celebrations and the Historical Association's Local and Community History Month.
The one-day free event will feature an array of stalls presented by heritage organisations and museums from across Thanet and East Kent, showcasing everything from remarkable rescues to extraordinary explorers! Visitors can also look forward to enhancing their knowledge or learning something new by attending short talks conducted by several of these organisations. And if that's not enough, there's even a local history drop-in session, providing an opportunity to ask questions and receive advice on your research.
The Tunnels popular Deep Tunnel Shelter tours will be available throughout the day, providing an opportunity to explore Ramsgate's Second World War history first-hand as the tours narrate the fascinating story of the collaboration between the town's unique mayor and skilled borough surveyor, who worked tirelessly to orchestrate the construction of the largest purpose-built air raid shelter in the UK.
The Tunnel's café will also be open, serving a variety of refreshments, light snacks, and delectable cakes.
For more information to book tours on the day or to see which organisations are attending, please consult the Tunnels website at www.ramsgatetunnels.org.
