During the mania of nineteenth century exploration of Africa by Europeans, the worlds of Frank Oates (the Leeds-born naturalist and explorer) and the Ndebele peoples of what is now southwest Zimbabwe collided. On the eve of the colonization of Africa, how did these two worlds, with limited prior contact, come to know and understanding one another?
Dr Joseph Higgins and Dr Christopher Prior will explore this question and more in a talk to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Frank Oates' death in 1875, a new exhibition at the Gilbert White, and the publication of their new book which for the first time utilities the letters and diaries of Frank Oates (held at the Gilbert White's House Museum). price £10 per person
